It depends on what you mean by "see". A VPN connection just gives you an
IP connection. It does not automatically give you name resolution or
browsing because it does not carry LAN broadcasts.
Can you ping a LAN machine by IP? If you can, your VPN connection works.
To ping by name or access shares by name you need DNS and/or HOSTS files (or
WINS and/or LMHOSTS files for Netbios names).
