Do anybody know how to connect Linux to a VPN server running
proprietary s/w?

The vendor is watchguard

Yep, ask the vendor for linux client sw. Some offer linux VPN
clients for their VPN solution, IIRC cisco and probably others.

Unfortunately they don't provide any Linux/Unix client.

That's why I hope somebody has experiences with setting up the VPN
connection to the proprietary watchguard server s/w

Drop them a polite mail, you'd like to get a linux version.

You could try a google search, but I wouldn't expect one, why
should one care to take the time reverse engineering some
proprietary VPN solution?

There is a howto for connecting an ipcop VPN to a FireBox somewhere on
the ipcop website: www.ipcop.org

No, YOU don't have ipcop - but IT uses the standard IPsec stuff.

Google for "ipcop vpn watchguard".
