Might be a rather dumb question, but is there any way to setup a VPN setting
without a server OS? I have a customer who needs our app to access a sql
server remotely (over the internet). They can't afford the purchase of a
Windows Server (at this time anyway). I don't want to open a security hole
by opening the sql server port, so it was suggested we use VPN (another
newsgroup).

Do they need a Windows Server OS to do this?

Thanks (I'm currently clueless to this technology)

Do you have a router or firewall. they may setup hardware VPN using the router or firewall.

Don't send e-mail or reply to me except you need consulting services. Posting on MS newsgroup will benefit all readers and you may get more help.

One way would be to use an ipsec endpoint device. Two of these could create
a secure tunnel between each other over the internet. Netgear sells some
pretty decent units for less than $100. They would use either preshared key
[basically a password] or computer certificates for the ipsec endpoints to
authenticate to each other. The link below is to a device that would work.
You can go to the website for Netgear and such to download the full manual
to see exactly what the device can do and how to set it up. An ipsec tunnel
[not transport] between networks using Windows built in ipsec policy may be
another option between the networks depending on the current configuration.
The links below may help. --- Steve

They could buy a VPN Appliance, typically that would be a traditional
hardware Firewall . What they are currently using between their LAN and the
Internet probably already has the ability.

Excellent!! Thanks for the ideas folks!

I'm going to dig in to find out how this is setup and configured - but if
anyone has any places to point me, that would be appreciated.

Thanks agian for the help.

You can also use the'Incoming connections' functionality in the Client SKUs
as a scaled down VPN server. See below link for more information about
'Incoming Connections'
