Hello,
I would like to try a VPN from our main network to my house. The main
network has a WWW server on it with a public IP, however, the ports
availble to the outside world are limited. Basically, I've looked at
using PPP over SSH for a Network to Network link. That said, and before
I invest all my time into this project: is the only port needed open on
the server 22?

Below is a small map for the 'visual' folk out there (like me):

Thanks in advanced,
Scott

+--------------+eth0 +--------------+
| Slackware 10 | eth0| Coyote Linux |ppp`-.dialup Internet)
| Client |---------| Firewall | `-.
+--------------+ +--------------+ `-.
`-.,---.
/ \
__ WAN )
+--------------+ _____......------''''' \ /
|SuSE 9.2 |eth0 ----'''''' `---'
|Server |
+--------------+
PUBLIC IP
Open Ports:
80 WWW
22 SSH
21 FTP
10000 WEBMIN

Yes, you'll need only port 22 opened at the server side.
There is a good mini howto in linux documentation.

What VPN are you using? OpenVPN can be configured to use almost any UDP or
TCP port.

"Technically" I would not be using a VPN software per se. It would be a
PPP-link, however, it would not be going over a direct modem-modem
connection but over a SSH tunnel.
