VPN Using XP SP3 and WinServer 2003

I set up a vpn that seems to be working i can connect to my network servers
using the IP address but not with with NetBios names even though i can ping
both. Any suggestions

That is normal with VPN connections. Netbios name resolution uses LAN
broadcasts, an these do not cross routers or WAN links.

If you want to use the Netbios name, set up an LMHOSTS file on the client
to resolve the names to IP addresses.

But the problem i am having is that i can see the servers as both ip and
netbios names but i can only authenticate to the ip number not the netbios
name.

I don't follow you. What authenticating?

The best way to access a share from a VPN client is to map it. Do a net
view to see the shares on offer on the target machine then do a net use to
map the share. You can supply a username/password in the net use command if
required.

When i use my username and password for the ip share it works but the same
server with the netbios name it won't take the username and password.
