hi,

domain win2k3, client winxp sp2 not member of the domain
the client connects to the domain using VPN with a valid user name and
password.
is their anyway that the client once connected with a vpn to get
automatically a network share from the server (like a home directory) like a
regular connected user.

for example, the client connects with vpn to the domain and upon connection
a new Z: drive appears with \\server\public\folder directory is mapped

thank you

you can create vpn with a logon batch file to do the mapping.

What you are talking about is done by a login script. Making a VPN
connection is not a login operation.

You could try using the "logon using a dialup connection" option on the
client so that it actually does a login. Otherwise you will need to use
someting else (not logon) to trigger the script to run.

Some VPN clients allow you to run a script once the client is connected.
Our Cisco client did, if memory served me correctly. The built-in Windows
XP VPN client, however, does not allow for this.

As long as the username and password on the workstation is the same as it is
on the domain the user account will utilize pass-through authentication when
the script runs and should be able to map the drives automatically. If the
passwords are different then the user must enter their logon information and
the login script will have to be ran interactively.
