I am trying to create a VPN connection. I have openned ports 1723 and
47 on my router. However, I get Error 800 which is VPN server
unreachable. Would really appreciate help.

Actually error 800 doesn't mean server unreachable. It means that a VPN
connection can't be opened. Error 678 indicates that the server can't be
reached.

Try changing the client to PPTP or L2tp (whichever you are using) rather
than Automatic. This should give you a more meaningful message.

I changed it to PPTP, and then got Error 678. Do you think I might also
have a problem with NAT?

If you are using PPTP behind a NAT router, you need to set the router to
forward tcp port 1723 from the router to the server's LAN IP. You then need
to use the router's public IP address (or its FQDN) when you try to connect.
The client connects to the router, which extends the connection to the
server on the LAN. The LAN machine must be using the NAT router as its
default gateway.

I gave up setting up VPN.

Following every instructions and configurations, and the only thing won't
change is it won't connect although all types of error codes were coming up.

It amazes me for how many frustrated people like myself are on the net for
searching solutions during my own search for possible solution.

The wizard for both server and XP should help you to do the work, and guess
what, there are plenty of manual configurations to be done "correctly" or it
won't help at all.

I also don't see any instructions from MS KB for how to set up even the very
basic of configuring two NICs as the server "demands" to have two NIC in
order to set up VPN.

it's a kind of task for people earning overtime pay but certainly does not
produce any productivities for a business.

Anyway, simply gave up.

Try disabling your firewall on the server that is doing the authentication
for the incoming call.

I don't have afirewall. In fact when I try to check the settings for
the firewall, it gives a message that "cannot setup firewall because
INAT is using it".

You cannot "forward" a protocol! But you are correct in that a PPTP
connection will fail if GRE is blocked at any point. The encrypted data is
enclosed in a packet with a GRE header.

I am thinking of Linux iptables...
But yes.. GRE must not be blocked.

In many hardware firewalls and routers, they may be called VPN Pass Through.
