VPN to SBS gives very patchy connection. Is this normal?

I keep telling the lady in the satellite office to stop moaning to me
and that internet connections can be patchy etc. etc. However, with an
8Mbs ADSL at her end and a 2Mbps ADSL at the server's end, I had hoped
that it would be a fairly transparent connection i.e. that she'd have a
home-from-home.

Is it normal for the connection to have to be re-established
repeatedly? Or is there something I can do to tidy it up? I've changed
the timeout to 2 hours (from 10 mins), but that's all so far.

Pete

Some idea of you configuration will be useful.
The failure rate for the connection should be very low (once a year'ish, and
automatic reconnect after failure).
I run many inter-site VPN links and have no trouble with them.
Do you loose the actual ADSL connection or just conductivity?. What do your
routers report when the link fails?
Are your sites fixed IP or using some sort of DNS service?
What is handeling the VPN, a router or a server.

John..

Thanks for the reply. I have a router at the server end and a USB modem
at the client end. I'll be putting a router at the client end in a day
or two and I'm hoping that will help. SBS 2003 talking to XP pro -
having used the wizards and the install floppy created by SBS.

Usually the problem is that the adsl and vpn connections are shown as
being connected, but the shared directories are not being accessed
properly. Here's an example.... the user browses to
\\server\sharedfiles\client_letter.doc, she opens it up and makes
modifications, she chooses "save as" and gets a 'path not found'
message.

I 'll have the router in before the weekend, so I may have an update
after that.

Thanks again,

Pete

Got the router in and it makes very little difference. The user reports
pop up windows all the time asking "do you want to stay connected to
SBS". Likewise, saving a document frequently brings up the "save as"
dialogue instead, with the mapped drive being inaccessible. She's
breaking my heart because the computer's breaking hers! I need a
hammer.
