VPN routing & remote access question

sorry if this is not the right group for the (please point me in the right
direction if necessary thanks)

I have 2 servers (both 2003 std) running sql2000 std

both are in separate domains, no trusts etc.

I need to replicate a databse between them. to do this, I have everything
running fine from sql server perspecitve, but the vpn is a bit of a problem.

I cannot do a hardware to hardware vpn or use ISA (not my network, not in my
sphere of control either)

I set up one server with routing and remote access, connected with a vpn
connection from the other one over internet (worked great!) I can go from
server a to server b with out issue.
I cannot however go the other way over the same tunnel.

example
server A is main server has routing and remote access loaded. server b is
remote server. I launch vpn connection from B to A, I can do remote destop,
sql enterprise mgr, etc. with that tunnel engaged, I can't go from A to B,
nothing not even a ping.

server A = 192.168.0.38 its router is 0.1 inside and a poublic IP on the
WAN

server B = 192.168.19.50 its router is 50.1 inside and a different public IP
on the wan.

like I said the vpn works from B to A and apps work from B to A over the
connection, but I can't go from A to B over that tunnel.

does that make sense? Is there a way to fix? (perhaps some sort of static
route or something (I'm getting a tad over my head but I can do it if
necessary. Any help appreciated.

After establishing the VPN, the server B will have two IP addresses. Can you ping the PPTP IP? If not, do you have any firewall or NAT enabled?

no I cannot ping it. I added a second nic to server b just to see if that was the problem, still I cannot ping the pptp-IP connection (192.168.19.100)


I don't need to route whole networks, just connect these 2 servers bidirectionally over a vpn.


there is no firewall, the windows firewall is all that is installed and it gets disabled by routing and remote access.

Any other ideas? thanks

and another thing.
I checked the properties of the server in the routing and remote access console and it was set to "remote access server" that works fine. as soon as I check the other box (router) the client that could connect can no longer connect. what gives?

don't ask how or why, but after configuring the router to go thru the new second nic instead of the original nic, now I connect (with both boxes checked) and I can ping the pptp ip. strange.
