Sorry if this is a repeat but my first post didn't seem to go through

I have installed Microsoft VPN connection on my WIN98SE laptop and have a successful VPN connection to the Win 2000 server at my work.

However step 2 is to connect (log on to server) using Remote Desktop Connection - this always times out.

Is there a trick to get WIN98 to connect to Win2000 using remote desktop connection or is this only possible if one of the computers is XP

All settings are correct as I can connect from XP laptop to 2000 server using same settings

I really want to be able to do it from the 98 laptop as the other is in constant use by my husband

The remote desktop works if connected in to office network so it is all installed OK - just can't get from the VPN connection to the server interface using the remote desktop connection

Any ideas

Do you have a firewall on the Windows 98 laptop?

Sorry this reply is slow....this is my third attempt to get it on the post

Both the laptops are behind a router with built-in firewall so no different. And the 98 laptop has been tried on a dialup account without a firewall

I think it's an issue that Remote Desktop is meant for at least the server or the client to be XP...in my cae neither. I have read that Win2000 uses Terminal Services Client with earlier OS platforms.....and that a licence is required for server and each client. Perhaps this is the problem

A license is only required if you are running Terminal Server in application
mode.

Does the connection work if you try to access the server from work?

I'm not sure what application mode is..can you explain?

Yes, I can get on from within the office network (but
hardly surprising)

Thanks for your reply

Don't worry....I just looked up application mode on Microsoft site. Yep, we would have application mode running.
From what I've seen, it's definitely a licencing issue....and I gather that our quota of licences is allocated, so unless someone wants to spend up I'll have to fight my husband and/or son who each have access to an XP computer.
