VPN Performance - Details inside...

Hello there,

Several business users require access via VPN to download email to their
home PCs, access files from the server etc from the convenience of their
sofas! I've set up VPN in "default" mode as far as I can tell - opened up the
correct ports on the router and allowed the users' group to access the server
remotely.

Creating a VPN connection on remote computers works without problems, they
connect absolutely fine. Great!

BUT

Navigating through the server is *very* slow. Changing directory on the
fileserver can take literally 5-10 minutes. Once files are set to download,
the speed is good - no problems.

Can anyone give me some pointers?

Spec of server:

Windows 2003 Small Business Server (latest SP)
Dual Xeon 3ghz
2gig RAM
2mb downstream connection
512k upstream connection

Spec of client (example):

Windows XP Professional (latest SP)
3ghz P4
1gig RAM
2mb downstream connection
512k upstream connection

Thanks a lot,

Rod Westwood

I forgot to mention, all computers on the network are using DHCP to assign IP
addresses.

Thanks for the tip, I'll try that out.

Also, I unchecked "Use default gateway on remote network" from VPN
connection. Works much faster from here on a dodgy 56k modem, will try on
broadband when I get home and let you know.

Tried both things last night.

My computer at home works perfectly well, fast directory access, no problems.

Three colleagues say problem is still there, very very slow access (one
person took 22 minutes to change directory).

Does *anyone* know what can be causing this?!
