I am working away from my office W2K server which is connected to the net
and has a private link to a private network. The server uses RRAS to route
IP traffic from LAN users to the net or the private network successfully.

I want to be able to access from my roaming laptop the remote network. Today
I use terminal services over the internet to get to my server and then can
work onward to access the remote network - a further TS session on
occasions....but would like a more elegant solution.

It is VPN the way to go or is there something else I should be considering.

I have tried a quick fiddle with VPN set up but not succeeded. Can someone
point me at an idiots guide checklist of what needs to be set at the basic
level. I have made contact with the server because I can see entries in the
logfile, but....

So far I have:
on the server
pptp ports
a user with dial in rights
the default policy which allows user settings to override

on the remote pc
vpn network entry

It gets to verifying user and pwd and then reports it is getting no response
(err 721)

Thanks
Ian

Error 721: Remote PPP peer or computer is not responding. If you have tried
many thing other people suggest like rebooting, reloading hardware and
re-installing the VPN or dial in connection, you still get the same problem.
I will suggest to check the router settings and make sure TCP Port 1723, IP
Protocol 47 (GRE) are opened. Also make sure that the router has the PPTP
enabled and not firewall block the traffic. On the RAS server, check the
DHCP settings.

Thanks Robert.

Ok, I disabled the firewall at my end and it works. I already had 1723 and
GRE enabled. What else might I have to change? It is Panada Antivirus and
firewall.
I'll probably work that bit out with a bit of time so moving back to my real
desire in this config....

I can now ping, etc the PCs on my office network. What I want to do is to
continue my IP traffic through my office LAN and down the private line to
the far distant network when I use their IP range. At present tracert just
times out at the first step.
In hope

I am not sure what you want to, but it sounds like routing issue.
