VPN will not connect

I am having loads of problems setting up a VPN. Iam using a Conexant Router
on the Server end with BT Openworld. I have opened port 1723 and directed it
to the server machine on my LAN. By using GRC.com I have tested to make sure
that the port is open and it is.

When I try to connect from the client computer I am always getting the error
800. Even when I have enabled the DMZ on the router I still get the error
800 when trying to connect via the VPN.

The LAN side works ok, all the other computers can connect to each other and
out to the web. I just can't connect to the VPN server from outside.

I have set up user names and paswords and ticked the box next to it on the
server machines new accounts page.

Could anyone tell me what I might be doing wrong. I am coming to the
conclusion that it is something related to the server computer and not the
router. Server is running XP Pro. I am not sure if this has anything to do
with it but as well as the ADSL connection there is also a modem connected
to accept incoming calls (to do with the property survey industry, QUEST)

I am so stuck and any thoughts would be great!

Cheers
Lenny

The first test should be, can you connect to the VPN server from a
client *inside* your LAN? i.e. If you can't do that much then you have
eliminated the ADSL part of the equation.

Hi,

Do not know the details of your router, but bear in mind for PPTP VPN, IP
protocol 47 (GRE) must also
be passed through by the router in addition to PORT 1723 to the VPN host
server.

Note that this is an IP PROTOCOL not a TCP/IP port. You will need to check
your routers
manual/docs to see how to enable this, if it isn't by default.

Regards

Paul.

Thanks Mad Zombie,
I have emailed the router maker (etec) and they say "You do not reqire to
change any of the hardware setting, by default it should allow the VPN to
pass through. All you need to set NAT transparency in the VPN software and
not in the Router."

As I am using the XP Wizard to set up a VPN I am sure that this isn't the
problem.

I have also opened Ports 1723, 47, 138, 137, 139 but still no good. I have
also changed the server machine but still using the XP wizard to set up the
VPN server, Still error 800 though.

Has anyone any idea what settings on the client might be causing this
problem or what settings within the XP server might be the problem?
Cheers.

If you set up one of the machines on the LAN in exactly the same way
with the VPN client (or if it's a laptop, if you plug it into the
network), can it connect to the VPN server over the internal network?

I have sorted the problem out and even though I there was no firewall
connected to the server I stupidly didn't think that the Zone Alarm on the
client would matter. I switched that off and now it all connects OK.
Thanks for the replies. They really are appreciated!

One very small thing now though. When I am connected to the VPN from the
dial up client (ntl) I can't send any emails using my NTL account!
