Hi
Hope this is the best place to post this ..
Trying to connect a remote XP client to SBS2003 server via PPTP VPN
Server set up ok for RRAS and this appears to be working since VPN
connection from desktop PC on on LAN side works ok

When we try remotely (either over dialup or broadband), we get error 721
authenticating user/password, and then timeout

Looks like this is a problem with GRE (protocol 47) not getting passed
properly. Router at server end is a Netgear DG834G running f/w 1.05
(latest), and is supposed to support VPN passthrough. On the router port
1723 is opened and forwarding to the server (verified by checking the
Netgears logs - there is a match recorded for 1723 when we try to connect),
but without running sniffer I can't see what's happening with GRE

Has anyone seen this, specifically with the Netgear DG834 or 834G ? I've
tried reducing MTU size in case of some kind of packet corruption, but still
no joy..

TIA
Mike

this may help. quoted from http://www.ChicagoTech.net

Error 721: Remote PPP peer or computer is not responding. If you have tried
many thing other people suggest like rebooting, reloading hardware and
re-installing the VPN or dial in connection, you still get the same problem.
I will suggest to check the router settings and make sure TCP Port 1723, IP
Protocol 47 (GRE) are opened. Also make sure that the router has the PPTP
enabled and not firewall block the traffic. On the RAS server, check the
DHCP settings.
