If you're saying that you're connecting to the Internet without a FW while
doing the VPN connection, then that is bad news, because VPN provides no
protection for the machine like the FW does.
I'll put it to you point blank. If you can do it, then purchase a wireless
router that as the VPN protocols that will make the VPN connection for you
so that you can run the VPN software on the machine behind the router and
make the connetion while using a wireless connection. With the router, you
can do the VPN connetion wired or wireless and the router provides the
protection for the attacks/compromise of the machine for your machine and
your company's network from the Internet for the computer behind it.
