VPN does not work with Linksys WAP54G

I am using a Linksys WAP54G wireless access point.
My internet connection works fine as i can browse the internet and download
my e-mail wireless.
On my laptop there is a VPN connection installed, this is a connection to my
company. The problem is that this vpn connection does not work when i'am
working wireless (linksys wap54g).
If i connect my laptop with a utp cable directly to my cable modem, the vpn
connection works fine.

Anyone advice, does Linksys WAP54G supports VPN anyway ?

I use VPN on my Linkysys BEF11S4 v1 router. And it works wired or
wireless when I connect the work laptop to the router. With the router, I
had the enable the VPN portocols that are on the Admin page in order for
the router to be able to tunnel into the company's VPN. The machine also
has AT&T Extranet VPN software installed.

All the VPN protcols on the router had to be enabled for the VPN
connection for it to work.

can't enable or disable VPN... am i correct ?
The fact that the WAP54G is not a router, but just an accesspoint, can it
support vpn ?

My bad on this man. I didn't notice that it was a stand alone AP. And
you're correct that the AP cannot do VPN. However, if you're using Win2K or
XP as the O/S, then you can setup those O/S(s) to do a VPN connection and
tunnel into your company's network. Does the VPN software you use allows
you to connect to the network as a workstation like it is when the machine
is physically at the company's location?

As far as i know, there is no firewall in een access point.
Software firewall in XP is disabled.

The WAP54G is not a router or firewall. However, the WAP54G is a network
device and has a TCP Address. How is it assigned and what is this
address? How is the WAP54G connected to the cable modem?

Are you sure you don't have a router that normally sits between the
cable modem and your network? If you do and it is performing NAT (almost
sure bet) most VPN will not survive the NAT. Some (but not all) of the
newer VPN software version will but the router also needs a upgrade to
support NAT Traversal.

If you're saying that you're connecting to the Internet without a FW while
doing the VPN connection, then that is bad news, because VPN provides no
protection for the machine like the FW does.

I'll put it to you point blank. If you can do it, then purchase a wireless
router that as the VPN protocols that will make the VPN connection for you
so that you can run the VPN software on the machine behind the router and
make the connetion while using a wireless connection. With the router, you
can do the VPN connetion wired or wireless and the router provides the
protection for the attacks/compromise of the machine for your machine and
your company's network from the Internet for the computer behind it.
