VPN connection problems!

I have 2 computers connected to a network, both the same, both with all the
same settings and both with the firewall disabled. One of the computers can
connect to the VPN and view the files on the server. The other computer
(when connecting one at a time) can connect to the VPN but I am unable to
view any of the files on the server or even connect to the server but the
VPN is connected.

Could anyone tell me why this might be?

I have also checked to make sure that all the network settings are exactly
the same on both machines but still only one can connect.

Please help!

You have checked the domain or workgroup settings (assuming Windows
based)? You have checked the DNS settings and the HOSTS file (if
required)?

Don't know if all vpn's are the same but on mine - Cisco 3.6 - once I've
connected to the vpn then the connected PC can't see the local network.

Permission to view the local network whilst connected needs to be granted by
the vpn administrator.

I have checked all the settings and they are just the same as with a
computer that does actually work.
I am using the microsoft VPN that it included in XP
Server is XP Pro as is the clients.
I have got a laptop working from another site (using it as as client) and it
connects with no problems, then when i take it to the problem site and add
it to the LAN, as with all the other computers being used as clients, I can
connect to the server straight away but using the search tool am unable to
find the files on the server.

Here is a point! Could it be the telephone cable wire? I have discounted
this so far due to the fact that the adsl works fine on the line

Just a thought but what do you think?

I was playing with OpenVPN a while back, it would work via
the Internet, but not over a lan. I came to the conclusion,
not being very wise with VPN, that it needed the internet to
work ;-)

The VPN is over the internet it just happens that the computers are on
separate LANs.
Both the server and the client computers connect to the internet via BT
Openworld Broadband.
Both of the computers are XP and i am using the built in VPN programme
I can connect to the server through the VPN OK but cann't see the folders on
the server. It is very intermittent but more often that not I am unable to
view any files. 5 minutes in 5 hours of trying.

This only seems to be happening in that office. At other offices I am able
to connect and view files with no problem. I have also connected a laptop at
one office where it works fine, then move to the problem office and I am
unable to connect.
