i am no certified expert or anything but you can go into
the properties of your vpn connection and then into
tcp/ip properties and find the box that says use default
gateway on network and then check it and say ok this
should le tyou surf the net while connected...

You're going to need a VPN client that supports
split-tunneling. Changing you gatewya might work, but it
might also remove your access to the local VPN nodes.
