Hi

From time to time and on different Win XP Prof. SP2 / SP3 clients, which
are connected to RRAS (Win Svr 2003 R2 SP2) and using that VPN
connection to browsing via IE, after some time of inactivity are still
connected to RRAS (PPTP) but there is no more traffic, no packets,
nothin'. If client try to ping IP for RRAS server from workstation there
is no reply - request timed out. If client disconnect VPN connection and
connect again everything works untill user make pause or stop using
apllications which make traffic over VPN.

Still worse, from workstations that have open i.e. RDP through VPN they
NEVER loose traffic, or if using ping -t ip_address_for_rras

Does anyone know why this is happening that clients after some idle time
does not have anymore traffic against VPN server but they have to
reconnect.

Clients are not set up to be disconnected after some idle time.

Best regards and thanks for any reply.

I have a simular problem.

í realy tried every thing, its driving me nuts.
- upgrades routers
- upgrade nic drvers
- changed alot of vpn client settings.

i placed the router in the network today so the firewall of sbs is
bypassed.

I hoop this helps i'll post my results here

In article <(E-Mail Removed)>,

The only solution for now known to me is to make always traffic using
ping -t ip_address_of_RRAS and to leave minimize cmd window.

When you make VPN connection for all users (system) at client computer
and put shortcut to startup group after user is logged on there is no
icon in notification area for VPN connection. Also if you open My
Network Places / Properties Detail View, explorer shows not connected
but if you use something as a home page from private network into which
you are VPN-ing you know that VPN is working. If you press F5 to
refresh icon for VPN connection show up in notification area and in
Network places states that is connected.

Event Viewer / System log

Event Type: Information
Event Source: RemoteAccess
Event Category: None
Event ID: 20194
Date: 02.09.2008
Time: 09:06:24
User: N/A
Computer: MYSERVER
Description:
The user DOMAINNAME\username connected on port VPN5-33 on 02.09.2008 at
09:05 and disconnected on 02.09.2008 at 09:06. The user was active for
1 minutes 21 seconds. 355 bytes were sent and 2349 bytes were received.
The reason for disconnecting was user request.

It is about time when user reported problems. User request for
disconnect is weird to me.

It could be the firewall or security settings issue. This link may help.
