When I connect to my remote server with the VPN connection, over the
internet, I can' t get out to the internet or check my email unless I
disconnect the vpn first. Is this supposed to work this way? I was
working for a compahy offsite several years ago and I would logon to
their server, over the internet, and be able to access the server drive.
We werer using windows 2000 professional and server, and I never had
this problem.

TIA

What type of VPN client are you using? If you are using a Windows built-in
client, go into the properties of the connection, Networking tab, IP
properties, Advanced button, uncheck "Use Default Gateway on Remote
Network."

If a third party VPN client, you will need to discuss this with your network
administrator.
