What you need sounds like a "split tunneling"
configuration on your VPN server. This allows you to
access the remote network on the end of your VPN tunnel,
AND allows you to access the Internet from your local
machine.
Be warned - split tunneling is inherently unsafe... which
is why your VPN probably has the feature disabled.
