VPN and remote desktop

I am trying to access my work computer from home. My home computer
runs Windows 2000, work is using Windows xp. I have downloaded the
patch for remote desktop connection for Windows 2000. I am able to
connect using VPN, however, when I use remote desktop connection I get
an error message:

Remote connections might not be enabled or the computer might be too
busy to accept new connections. It is also possible that network
problems are preventing your connection.

I have checked my IP address at work, it is correct. I am not able to
ping my work computer. Any suggestions? (Non-technical, please).

At a guess - your IP at work is either 10.x.x.x or 192.x.x.x ????
If so, then you are using the wrong IP!!
both above types are LOCAL only - and do not exist beyond the local physical
LAN.

Windows 2000 Professional does not support RDC, only Windows 2000 Server
does; and you must configure the server to support this feature - it is not
on by default.

I thought you were able to download a patch from microsoft to allow RDC
on Windows 2000:

Did I misunderstand the instructions?


I previously had dial-up and was able to use VPN and netmeeting. I
changed to DSL and could no longer use ne meeting. My office started
using remote desktop. I can't use that either.

Correct, you should be able to install and run the Remote Desktop Client
on Windows 2000. Since this newsgroup is to support those running Windows
Millennium (Win Me) rather than Windows 2000 I suspect Richard may have
mis-read your post and thought that you wanted to access a RD on Win 2000
from Win Me. Hence his comments.

Given Mike's new slant on your post I would suspect that your broadband
provider may be blocking the ports you need open for remote access. You'll
need to ask them in order to get a definitive answer. Also, if they
provided a router or other network gear to you, that may also be configured
to block remote access ports. That should be easy enough to fix but the
other problem may be insoluble.
