VPN and network drives

Have successfully setup a VPN between two offices using hardware
routers.

Tested the setup by being able to ping the other devices on a
different subnet fine and also could open a NAS device by web browser.

Problem is I can not map a network drive on a different subnet..
No problem mapping the drive on the same subnet.

So from this deduce that the problem is not the VPN nor the remote
drive as both can be accessed. So if I can ping the remote drive and
also open the web browser config page of the remote drive then why
cant I map the drive to a local machine???

Thanks

Are all the machines in the same domain? What happens if you try to map
a drive? Have you tried using net use command?

Then forget name resolution.
You'll have to do everything by IP#s,...which means the IP#s can't be
allowed to change.

Yeah am doing it by IP but not working.

For example \\192.168.101.4\share

This will work when the PC creating the mapped network drive is on the
same subnet but when the subnet is different this fails to find the
folder share...Even thou can ping ok..

Then whatever is acting as the LAN router between the two IP segments is
preventing it, probably with some kind of ACLs.

Because ping works, the networking componenets are already working at Layers
1, 2, & 3.

I've had exactly the same problem. Router to router vpn (netgear DG834G to DG834G AND also tried DG834G to netgear FVS318) , different subnets, firewalls turned off both ends, ping works both ways and sql server connection also works but mapping network drive using ip addresses through explorer or net use just wont work.

Software VPN connection isn't a problem as the client will be allocated a local ip address on connection, so the network drive mapping is within same subnet and does actually work. This is how I'm currently keeping the 2 sites connected. This is my current interim solution but I really need to get router to router connection working.

I know I could use an FTP server instead, but it's not the elegant solution I was looking for. I believe that mapping a network drive should work ... but something's stopping it.

If you have a resolution to this I'd really appreciate if you could let me know. Actually , any advice at all would be gratefully received.

Regards

Richard S

Can you net view remote resource using IP, for example net view
\\192.168.1.1?
