It is possible the VPN changes the routing table or DNS/WINS. post the result of ipconfig /all on one VPN client may help.

I don't know much about VPNs but a group of people on our network have
started experiencing problems since joining them to a domain on a W2k3
server. We were on a Novell network and have since changed to Microsoft.
They never had problems running a VPN client while connected to our Novell
network. Now, it seems they have problems accessing network drives on the
domain when they launch the VPN. They are also experiencing some Lotus Notes
e-mail problems, too.
Our network is simple with one DC, a member file server, all LAN. Our DHCP
is our router. Windows Firewalls have been disabled for now. All PCs are
WinXPsp2.
Anyone had these problems or know how to fix these problems?
Thanks,
Johnny
