As subject really,

Looking for a handset that will plug into my router, preferably a
cordless one if such things exist.

ISP is Plusnet, and I want to give the VoIP service a try with the
intention of using it as the primary house phone. (not for emergency
calls etc)

Get a VOIP ATA instead, such as one of these

http://www.voiptalk.org/products/Gra...dytone+ATA-486

and you can plug your existing cordless phones into it.

Even does PSTN passthrough so the ordinary line still works for both
incoming and outgoing calls. Some models also route PSTN calls onto
your IP network so you can answer them from a softphone or IP based
phone elsewhere in the building.

Disclaimer: I've not yet tried one of these, but I hope to, on the
25th Dec... :-)

Hmmm. I was rather hoping to use my routers built in capability. As far
as I can tell (and I acknowledge I may be wrong here) but this device
does what my router already does?

All I want is to plug an ordinary phone handset into my routers VoIP
ports.

Its just a normal DECT phone that you need.

If your router already has a builtin ATA, then just plug in any
ordinary phone. You may need a BT to RJ11 adapter, and optionally a
ringer capacitor in the adaptor (most modern phones don't need this I
believe).

What sort of router do you have?

Are you kidding? Is it really that simple? I have a DECT cordless phone
but the plug will not fit into my router.

The ports on the router are labelled FXS1 and FXS2. They seem to be
about the same size and shape as what I think is called RJ11 (the same
cable that carries my ADSL from the wall point to the router.

So All I need then is an adaptor to convert the larger plug which
currently goes into the wall to the smaller RJ11 size? Blimey.

If a had a length of RJ11 cable lying around, could I use that? Or must
it be an adapter?

Some phones need the ringing capacitor that's in the adaptor, some don't,
it's a case of suck it and see. Adaptors aren't expensive so are probably
worth it to save hassle.

For VoIP specific questions, go to uk.telecom.voip.
