Hello all,

I am new to this (VoIP) and would like to know a little more about this to
get up and running. (I have a lot of family abroad and would be cheaper for
me if this actually works!)

So:-

1. Does this work?
2. Will it work with any ISP/ADSL connection?
3. Which VoIP companies can anybody recommend?
4. What is P2P? Do I need to know anything about this?

All advice appreciated. Thanks.

Cap Smith

Yes, mostly.

Emmm YESSSS!

www.skype.com
If you are in the UK I would recommend something like
http://www.call1899.co.uk/

p2p is Peer 2 Peer and is a system for transferring data between two
individual PC's this comes in many flavours which to an extent includes such
things as VOIP Telco services, Messenger Services, File Transfer etc

Nope!

Skype uses proprietary protocol (based on P2P principles) which gives
excellent quality but isn't compatible with
other VoIP providers who use the standard SIP protocol.
Have look at:
www.sipgate.co.uk

That's not a VoIP service provider, merely cheap calls service. You can use
them to route your VoIP calls to regular phones
IF your VoIP provider let you call 0800 and / or 0808 numbers for free AND
provide suitable CLI.

Martin

Can I give some Usenet advice? Don't multi-post! In the newsgroups line add
all the groups you want the message to reach, that way you won't be sending
umpteen copies.

Depending on where to and what you use.

>2. Will it work with any ISP/ADSL connection?

Yes, but generally you push voip traffic through a VPN

>3. Which VoIP companies can anybody recommend?

You don't need a voip providor for small amounts of traffic.

Peer To Peer - used mainly for file sharing between two endpoints (nodes)

Tell us more of what you want to do, and which countries - this affects
hardware.

Also have a look at skype http://www.skype.com/

Also, MSN Messenger probably has all you need built in already. You you use
messenger?
