Hi everyone,

We use this sweet program at http://www.vncscan.com so we have the choice to
use either their built-in XP RDP or use their deployment wizard to deploy
UltraVNC with encryption enabled and Active Directory authentication.

The question is which option would be best? All of our computers are on
either a trusted LAN or accessed remotely with VPN.

RDP is much more efficient but the desktop is not "shared",...the user is
locked out while you use the desktop if you used the user's credentials. If
you use other credentials then the user is completely logged out when you
log in.

Using "Remote Assistance" which is also based on RDP, allows a shared
desktop, but it must be initiated by the user. Personaly I have never used
it.

VNC is sluggish and the screen quality looks horrible (to me),...but it is a
good choice for Win2000 and older machines. It is also fine for XP if Remote
Desktop or Remote Assitance doesn't fit the particular situation well.

For me this is not an "either/or". I use both,...sometimes with one being a
"backup" for the other if one method fails.

They solve different problems.

What problem are you trying to solve? That's your answer.

I'm always surprised at "professionals" who STILL have to be asked:
"Have you checked (event viewer / syslog)".

What if you had to choose between VNC or PCanywhere for a win2000 remote
desktop solution? Any preference there? Thanks. -- tom c

It's a matter of perference and pricing. VNC you can get for free which the
later versions no longer transfer passwords clear text, or you can pay for
PC Anywhere. Another popular choice is http://www.logmein.com. Affordable
and has a lot of great features for "point-and-click" administration.

Hope this helps,

Well I'd try very hard to use VNC as it is free and I'm not a big fan of
PCAnywhere, to be honest.

TRY Ultravnc, this version uses video much more efficiently, the security is
a little more advanced as well.
