I appreciate certain VNC ports need to be opened if connecting to a
machine operating behind a NAT router but am wondering;

If two computers connect via VPN then am I correct in assuming that
the VNC port does not need to be opened on the routers, I am going on
the theory that they are effectively on the same network.

You are correct, I use this setup almost every day and the only ports
open on the routers are the VPN ports (one at each end)
