I have 2 PC's. One connects to the Internet via an ISDN card and
Freeserve, my ISP. I'll call this PC "Emu". The other PC, "Tortoise",
connects via NETBUI to Emu and vice versa, via a a pair of network cards
and a X over cable. Tortoise does not need to connect to the Internet
for now. I want to run VNC so as to use Tortoise as a terminal for Emu.
I have installed the server version on Emu and the viewer version on
Tortoise. Can someone offer idiot proof (because with IP stuff I AM an
idiot...) instructions as to suitable local IP addresses and gateways
(or whatever it is I need) for both PC's, so firstly each can ping the
other over the ethernet cable, and then secondly, and hopefully, I can
get VNC to work? Currently Emu is given a none fixed IP address each
time I connect to Freeserve, I think I want another fixed, none Internet
valid local address on both machines as well, do I not? Gateway stuff is
foreign to me, I need put 123.456.78.9 on Emu and blah blah on Tortoise,
with the following numbers here, too. As I say, I'm an IP idiot :-)

Thanks!

Make up a number between 0 and 255, call it x.

Give emu address 192.168.x.1 on its LAN interface and tortoise
192.168.x.2. Give both a netmask of 255.255.255.0.

If tortoise does not need the Internet you don't need a gateway on
tortoise. Emu already has one.

On tortoise, tell the VNC client to connect to 192.168.x.1:0.

Regards, Ian

Fantastic, works great, straight "out of the box" I didn't know quite
what to expect with VNC, I am very impressed!

Thanks for the instructions. Can I now remove NETBEUI protocol and just
use TCP/IP for all inter computer data transfers? seems odd having 2
protocols doing the same thing?

Thanks again.

You can remove NETBEUI if you want, but it wont make much difference, the
software chooses which protocol it wants. Take it off if you want, leave it
on if you want.

You can keep NETBEUI if you want, in small environment its no problem with
dual/triple protocolls and NETBEUI has lower overhead.
