VISTA: Is it possible to bridge a bluetooth and wifi network?

In XP, you just select the two network connection icons, right click
em and choose bridge - easy! In vista, there is no option to bridge...
Clicking a single device and choosing bridge brings up the error:
"you must select at least 2 high speed internet devices that are not
being used by internet connection sharing".

I'm trying to get online on my phone (k800i) via my laptop web
connection. I have everything set up perfectly but vista wont connect
the wifi and the bluetooth! arg!

Anyone got any thoughts on this?

Thanks a lot!
Ciarán

I don't believe it's possible to bridge, but it should be possible to
use Internet Connection Sharing to do the trick.

Cool, sounds promising.... Is it possible to change the IP address
that ICS uses? My router uses 192.168.0.1 and I'd prefer not to change
that if possible!
Cheers,

No.
It is not possible.
Bridging is a Layer2 function (not Layer3 or 4)
Ethernet and Bluetooth do not have the same Layer2 (Media Access) Protocols
Ethernet and Bluetooth also do not have the same Layer3 or Layer4 Protocols
either for that matter.

Joining disimilar networks required a Protocol Gateway Device. This is
practically a "thing of the past" and was used back when businesses ran
IPX/SPX over Ethernet,...TCP/IP over Ethernet,...and Token Ring all within
the same facility or group of facilities. Some LAN Routers could be
configured to perform this. These were *real* routers ($$$$),...back when
people actually thought of real routers when the word was used,...back
before everyone's minds were "poluted" by the marketing of home-user SOHO
firewalls for CableTV/DSL that incorrectly call themselves "routers" when
they are not routers.

Futher FYI....

Bluetooth is not a "real" network and is not routable.

It is a Point-to-Point Protocol & Link between two end-point ("dead-end")
devices that make up what is called a PAN (Personal Area Network)

A Device such as a PC can connect to multiple BT Devices at the same time
and can communicate with all of them,...but it will not serve as a "router"
between the devices. If you want data from one device copied/moved to
another the two devices either need to connect directly to each other,..or
you would have to copy from the 1st device to the Laptop and then followed
by connecting to the second device to copy from the laptop to the 2nd device
in a two-step process.

Thanks for the info Philip. My router seems stuck on 192.168.0.1. Even
when I change it in the router settings, the control page is only
accessible via 192.168.0.1 and the ICS cannot be enabled (shows
"another device is using this address" message). Does this mean that
it's not possible for me to get internet access via a bluetooth PAN
network on vista without a third party program?

As far as I know, it's not possible.

1. ICS is in Windows,...not the Router. Turn it off,...you are *not*
sharing any connection with Windows here.

2. Bluetooth does not use TCP/IP

3. There is no such thing as a thrid party program to do something that is
not possible.

ICS allows multiple devices to share one network connection (ethernet,
in this case). It can also cross connection types; a common example is
using ICS to share a single dial-up modem to a small network.

I've used it myself to share an EVDO card provided internet connection
out to my dad's laptop so he could get online in a pinch.

>2. Bluetooth does not use TCP/IP

This sentence makes no sense.

Ethernet doesn't use TCP/IP either, but TCP/IP can run over Ethernet.
Similarly, TCP/IP can run over Bluetooth.

>not possible.

This *should* be possible without third party programs, but ICS is tied
to using 192.168.0.1, which means that particular IP can't also be your
default gateway, and ideally you shouldn't be using 192.168.0/24 on your
internal LAN at all if one or more machines use ICS.

In this particular case solution appears simple, change the router's IP
to something outside of 192.168.0/24, I'd suggest 10.98.0.1 with a
255.255.255.0 subnet mask myself, this dodges most of the common default
IP ranges that I'm aware of, which makes networking easier.
