As soon as I enable Remote Desktop within Routing and Remote Access on
Windows 2003 Server, leaving VPN Gateway (L2TP/IPSec ) enabled, my second
computer/client cannot connect anymore. Do I need to choose "either/or"
?? Apparently yes, because my Remote Desktop client software fails to
connect now.

What is the difference between VPN Gateway (L2TP/IPSec) and the Remote
Desktop service?

VPN is a Virtual Private Network to get securte access from anywhere to your
private network.
RDP is Remote Desktop Service to get access to your private network from
anywhere. RDP can be uswd over VPN to get secure access to your private
network

You should not be using remote desktop to allow client access to your
server unless you have Terminal Services installed. Remote access to server
using remote desktop should only be used for administration and is limited
to two sessions (one on the server an one remote).
