Here's my situation. I'm running virtualization software to test several
different OS on my Laptop and simulate a network enviroment. My question is
if I need to purchase additional software for withing the virtual machine for
the oS or will the OS on my laptop cover me? If so does anyone know a
affordable solution? I'm planning on having no more 10-15 machines in a
virtual envirment. Most likely it will be closer to 10.

Hi George ,

My understanding of your issue is you are concern about the license of the
OS in VPC. For licensing questions:

You can call 1-800-426-9400 (select option 4), Monday through Friday, 6:00
A.M. to 6:00 P.M. (PST) to speak directly to a Microsoft licensing
specialist. Worldwide customers can use the Guide to Worldwide Microsoft
Licensing Sites http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/index/worldwide.asp to
find contact information in their locations.

Thanks for understanding.

Best regards,

George:

Yes you need a license for each MS operating system running in virtual
Machines, excepts in case you are using Windows 2003 R2 and Virtual Server
R2 where you can use up to 4 Virtual machines with One OS License if i'm not
wrong (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserv...e/default.mspx

Be carefull with the product you are using for virtualization because
Microsoft does not support Microsoft products running on Non MS
Virtualization Software

Hope this helps

Have you considered an MSDN operating system subscription?

I think everyone is misunderstanding what I'm asking or I was not clear in
what I'm asking. I understand that I need a license for each microsoft os I
run in vm. My question is really relating to virus protection. My
undersatnding is I need seperate virus protection from what is on my host
system to protect each vm because even though I have virus protection on the
host system this protection does not protect to vm. I was ereally wondering
if anyone knew of an affordable virus solution for about 10-25 vm i plan on
running.

If it is a temporary situation, you might want to think about 30-day
full versions of antivirus software. Even better, if you are planning
to stay within your "virtual environment" you could skip
antivirus-software if you use an internal LAN only, or connected to a
loop-back adapter. There is no way for a virus to get in there.
Might save you hardware investments too, as antivirus software will
take some (and sometimes a lot of) hardware resources......

Cheers,

Trumpeteer

George:

If you will connect your Virtual Servers to internet, yes you need an
antivirus for each one. Even in a Lan environment you need antivirus if you
are running some services to the network.
About the antivirus in the Host machine, remenber to exclude the Virtual
Server Directories from your regular Scans (in case the Virtual Machines are
in OFF state)
