Hi,

I setup virtual Server R2 on my laptop and am trying to have my laptop and
the virtual network to talk to each other but can't seem to get it working.

I would like to have my laptop + Virtual seperated from my Corporate network.

Laptop: Vista Business with one network card.

Any help would be appreciated.

Virtual Server R2 is a software that you install in an OS that allows you to
install other Virtual computers. You said you installed Virtual Server
R2.........did you install a virtual OS?

The above statement makes no sense. The laptop has an OS presumably that you
use to connect to your corporate network.........you add Virtual server and
set up a network between the Virtual OS and the laptop.....but the laptop OS
STILL has to connect to the corporate network.
If this is a corporate laptop I would not advise doing this with out the
support of the IS department.

Sorry for the confusion. I install Virtual Server software on my Vista OS.
In my Virtual Web Adminstration Portal I have 2 Server OS and one XP install.

Yes, it is connected to the Corporate Network but doesn't have to be it's
more for functionality so that I can browse the Internet.

Is it possible to have my laptop and virtual working at the same time as
having my laptop connected to the Corporate network???

You can't. Virtual Networks have to be associated with a "real" Network
Adapter of some sort that can actually pass network traffic. The Laptop
only has one Network Adapter. Even if it had two (like one wired, one
wireless) they both have to be active which means both have to be connected
to something,..if they aren't connected to something they will automatically
disable.

There is only one possiblity I can think of and it may not work. Go into
Add Hardware and add the Microsoft Loopback Adapter. When finished it will
show in the Properties of Network Places as another network. Give this
adapter a Static IP Configuration that is *not* on the same subnet as the
Company Network.

In the VPC you need to associate the Virtual Adapter with the Microsoft
Loopback Adapter. In the OS of the VM configure the Nic with an IP
Configuration compatible with the one you did on the Laptop with the
Loopback Adapter.

Hi Phillip,

Thanks for the info. I already try adding a loopback and configure it the
same way as what your describing with no luck.

If I use a wireless router and configure my laptop with the alternate
configuration tab and associate my guest os to the wireless Network I should
be able to get it working???

Sound ugly to me.

The way I described is the most straight-forward way to do it. If it didn't
work you may have done something wrong along the way or used the wrong
concept or method to test it and thought it was not working when it really
was. If you don't approach it with the right expectations you can create
confusion.

Hi Phillip,

I revisited my virtual network that I attach to the loopback and I notice
that I forgot to put a check mark in the box for the network card. It's
working now.

Thanks

....or use VMWare Workstation rather than Virtual PC, use 'bridged mode' for
Ethernet (the default) and it will accomplish this without any fussing ;-)
