Hi guys

My parents-in-law have just got Virgin Media broadband, cable BB not adsl.
They keep asking me to create them an email address. I would have thought
that when they signed up they would get an email address automatically - is
that correct?

They say they have all the documentation but there is nothing there about an
email address.

I know sweet FA about Virgin (even less so the cable version) so would
appreciate any help on this one.

I'd personally advise them to avoid a virgin.com address and get a domain of
their own or use hotmail or such. It'll make life so much easier when they want
to move from Virgin's joke of a service.

Or Google Mail .means they always have it even if they leave Virgin.

You get 5 x 30Mb email addresses and can have 3 aliases within each of them
giving a total of 15.
If they log in here (using their username and password) they can set up their
email addresses to suit:-

forgot to say that their help page gives full instructions:-

the email link takes you to more info on setting up for pop3 or using webmail.

I also recommend a google gmail account - but the virgin one has its uses.

One of my ancient address that freeuk still supports has suddenly in the last
week or so had an insane influx of garbage spam. Either someone got my address
(it had long been free of any significant spam) of they're doing a dictionary
attack.

Bastards.

Should be locked up for 25 yrs if caught.

There should be a link from the Virgin web homepage to setting up email
accounts

But I wouldn't bother, Virgin "time out" email accounts that haven't been
used
for about 6 months, the petty bastards

I would go for a googlemail address, easy to set up, and they also have
optional SSL port 465 which is handy as many public open wifi allow
sending through that port when you are out and about.
and of course you can also read your googlemail anywhere on webmail
as well as your Pop3.

Do they?, I have several that my sons set up and haven't used for well
over 12 months, a quick check shows they all still work.

Not sure how things work now but when I started with NTL I logged on
with the user name and password they gave me and set up e-mail addresses
for the family which had unique passwords, 10 were allowed then.

As mentioned elsewhere, get a domain, it costs loss than a fiver a year
and is still there if you leave your ISP.

Virgin have emailed me several times threatening me with losing my
Virgin Addys if i didn't make a regular connection.

So i gave up using them, I'm not going to use a ISP that risks my addys
