Virgin Media announces 20 meg broadband

Virgin Media has this morning announced its plans to double the speed of its
'XL' cable broadband from 10 to 20 Mbps from May. This will make Virgin's
broadband service one of the fastest services available in the UK taking
advantage of its unique cable network.

This change will also result in a price rise from £35 to £37 per month
(including VAT) but the upstream speeds will also increase to 768 Kbps,
bringing it into line with some of the faster DSL services.

Are they not now imposing a 50gb FUP though - so not much use having higher
speed.

They don't seem to be able to manage 5Mbps downstream off-peak in
Leicester in any sort of repeatable manner so this is just total
marketing hype. IMHO of course.

768kbps is not a fast upstream either. I have 1.3Mbps upstream with
the option to go to 2.5Mbps for an extra 12 quid a month (40 quid
total).

Well FUP/AUP don't usually state a figure, that is the bone of contention
for a lot of people.

It is only anecdotal evidence, not official. Specifically, a friend had an
email suggesting he was using too much (not sure how much he was leeching
but in the hundreds of gb) and the CS rep he phoned on the number given to
"discuss his usage" suggested 50gb would be figure to heed.

Could have been the CS bullshitting but I expect some sort of crackdown when
VM goes through all the books looking for extra value.

My brother-in-law who's with Virgin-NTL quoted some numbers to me but I have no idea where he
got them from.

He reckon 1 GB a day but you can exceed that figure temporarily as long as the 5-day average
or something like that doesn't exceed 5GB. He is a proper IT professional (not monkey on
phone) so he should know his stuff.

So, I phoned Virgin.

After making clear I wanted to hear the full story the CS rep found the latest info they had.

In short they're saying that downloads are indeed unlimited but they made a point about ppl
running a server. They might be in contravention of the AUP if it generated heavy traffic.
