I have just upgraded from STB 4 Mb/s to Modem 20Mb/s

I am currently only getting about 2Mb/s from various sites - ie worse
than my previous service - but I do get about 17Mb/s when I FTP a
large file from my Virgin web space.

I am interested in what speeds people get on the 20Mb/s service
(accessing services outside of Virgin).

(Part of Virgin says there are current problems in the area which may
be causing this - others say there are no problems!!)

Manchester

Your ability to download from *any* internet site is limited to upload speed
of /their/ connection, plus contention ratios and other associated problems.

This is *not* unique to VM, despite what certain people in here might want
you to believe ;-)

A common problem is that ISP's buy less Internet bandwidth and then
over subscribe thier network. I can assure you that virgin media has
done this. But complicated problem as some people get high speeds even
a peek times and other dont. Try doing a speed test in the early hours
of the morning some day. Off Peak hours with Virigin are after 12:00
At night.

Should have written in their advertisements " For best results use
only after midnight when you should be going to bed " .

Yes they should have, I was going to ditch my SkyBB and go to virgin
as my Phone line is just not good enough for high speed internet, Max
Speed was around 2mbps, with people in around me getting 6mbps. But as
soon as i did a bit of research into virgin media, it was really clear
the people could not get the speed they were paying for, the problem
was not laws of physics like ADSL but simply that Virgin media wanted
to make as much money as possible and did not really want to make much
investment, problem is when you have over 3 Million customers you get
a problem with them posting thier problems on the internet.

The OP said '17mb when ftp from a vm site' which suggests the connection is
OK and the sites he is downloading from are the problem - or he has issues
when downloading off net from VM. He should post in the VM support groups.

Please tell me what is the use of paying for a 20 MB connection when
the only time you can obtain anywhere near that speed is by
downloading from gamefiles.blueyonder.co.uk . A friend has an ADSL
connection with BE we both downloaded the same file from the same site
at the same time the other day he was getting 50% faster speed than
what I was with my XL connection he only has 12. something or other
fromBE .
What is the use of complaining to ANY VM personnel by any means news
group support only come back with the same bullshit, called India the
other week told the guy my connection was down and could not on the
net at all he immediately asked me to down load four files from
gamefiles all hope went out the window at that point.
