Haven't seen much comment on here re Virgin broadband (not that I've been
looking very long!). I'd be interested to hear from any users or past users
as to whether they'd recommend it or not.

Cheers
Dave

It seems pretty reliable so far, (about 7 months now I've been on it).
Being NTL their network is not the best, they use the same proxies NTL
do, and their usenet server is a little slow coughing up messages, but
the actual connection is stable and reliable.

Any idea whether they have moved to using DataStream at all exchanges ?
I saw a note a while back (regarding migrations to Metronet, when it was
awkward to handle DataStream <-> IPStream suggesting that Virgin.net had
been using both). Simply asking, because someone (checking Tesco.net to
get service) was unable to as there was insufficient capacity - perhaps
insufficient on DataStream from that particular exchange... so if it's
addecting new customers for Tesco.net, similar probs might exist when
signing up for Virgin.net, with both being maanged by NTL. Peter M.

I have been meaning to find this out myself, and have won an award for
procrastination, partly due to the fact when I talk to tech support, I
seem to know more about their network than they do <g>.

I know virgin.net are signed up to supply MACs so I am thinking maybe
this indicates a change on this front?

Metronet and Freedom to Surf were triallists of handling such migrations,
but it is good to know that if Virgin will issue a MAC, then Tesco could,
too, should one need it... that just leaves Tiscali as the black sheep...

Nearly a year on it so far and no complaints. Not the fastest in the
world but when you're on a budget that's not always the main
consideration!

Think the speed is going to be increased soon, though... BICBW!

I set someone up with them about 6mths ago and they were a good deal
then but things may have changed. Pros are low cost for basic service
(from 14.99), cons are email support can be slow and phone support is at
premium rates.

I'd say look for someone with local rate phone support for those times
when you have to call. Plusnet aren't faultless but may meet your needs.

Only been with them since the 1/08/05 but no complaints so far. Speed
seems good in everyday use and when I checked with an online tester.

A bonus is there is no 12 month contract. When I joined they gave a free
modem and connection with no fee if you left before 12 months but since
then they have introduced a charge.

when NTL took control perhaps ?
<http://networks.silicon.com/broadband/0,39024661,39124562,00.htm>

not sure they have migrated old users from IPstream, seem to be
running both in parallel - old IPStream and new users on Datastream.
