Just set up this router and everything appears to be working fine. However,
the auto-detect feature assigned the following settings after probing the
connection:

VPI 0
VCI 38
Encapsulating Type LLC/SNAP
Protocol PPPoE
Modulation G.DMT

I understood that for BTO the encapsulation was PPPoA and modulation was VC
MUX. As I say, everything is working, but it would be good to know...

Sorry, that should read protocol = PPPoA and encapsulation = VC MUX. I
assume that G.DMT is okay for modulation...

Hi there,

I have a Vigor 2600, my settings are:

VPI 0
VCI 38
Encapsulating Type VC MUX
Protocol PPPoA
Modulation G.DMT

This was done from auto detect 18 months ago. If it works i shouldn't worry.
AFAIK BT introduced support for PPPoE on the ADSL network some time in the
second half of last year. MY ISP (Nildram) also recommended the settings I
have...

James

From what I've heard, one of them is for ADSL over ISDN and the other is
over normal copper wires.

would guess?

No - thats totally wrong

PPPoA/E has nothing to do with that... 0 in fcat, you won't find ADSL over
ISDN in the UK but thats for a different reason

Sunil

PPPoA is the default setting for all ISPs using BT Wholesale's ADSL network.

Recently, BT Wholesale have started enabling PPPoE on their exchnages and
hence some routers "auto-detect" the PPPoE settings instead.

You can change them to the recommended PPPoA settings (that most people use)
or leave them on PPPoE, as long a it works

Regards
Sunil

Vigor - good choice !
BTO - bad choice - there are better and cheaper ISP's !

Point taken. I've been with BTO for 3.5 years now, and haven't quite
mustered the energy to switch elsewhere. In my experience, the service has
its ups and downs over fairly lengthy cycles, so praise of other ISPs of the
sort "Hey, I migrated a month ago and xxx are great!" are dubious. With this
caveat in mind, do you have any particular recommendations?

Thanks.
