Vigor 2600 Vs BT home network

Hi Guys,

I'm currently running a small hub/ethernet network at home to connect 2
machines (win 2k & win 98) and I'm looking into distributing my broadband
connection to the second (kids') machine. Purely from a financial outlay
perspective, there is little to choose between the BT-offered home network
system and the Vigor 2600 (as recommended by a kind subscriber in response
to a previous posting of mine) however I get the feeling that there's prolly
a reason why the Vigor should be the obvious choice. I don't need wireless.

Can anyone help by telling me which I should go for and why , I have the
usual froggy BT broadband connection which I understand will go if I get the
Vigor. Speed of file transfer and connection when both machines are online
would be important to me.

I've been lurking for weeks now hoping to get some sort of a comparative
idea but it hasn't been addressed directly (that I've seen) I am still a
little hazy on details hence the question.

TIA for your help

Paul

I just upgraded my 2600 to firmware 2.5 this morning.
I now find options to do some limited Web filtering -
you can stop web surfing by IP address, and block URLs
which contain certain words.
No substitute I'm sure for however you choose to supervise the kids,
but might be some help to you.

I'd go for the vigor because its nice and not made by BT, that probably
isn't reason enough though.
I also would never use BT Broadband because I think its a rip off for what
you get and prefer plusnet.

All of that though is personal choice and the bt product may, for some
people do what they want.

Interesting so if you filter 'sex' you can no longer surf to
www.westsussex.gov.uk to renew your libary books.
Is there anything else good \ useful about upgrading the firmware as I don't
have any problems with what i've got.

Seems to be a lot of new features.
801.x authentication for wireless (assuming of course you run a RADIUS
server)

Wireless connections can be run over a VPN

The DNS forwarding seems to change - my laptop just
got a DHCP configuration which directly gave it Plusnet's DNS servers.

I upgraded as I had a problem with wireless to my laptop
(laptop running Redhat 9, prism2_cs driver, WEP enabled)
Every time I rebooted the laptop, it would not set up the wireless session
again, and I was rebooting the access point.
Stramge thing to happen.
Upgrade seems to have cured this.

I went for the Vigor because of its list of features. Some of which you
may not need now but u may need later, e.g. VPN
