Views on Metronet anyone?

Hi

I'm considering migrating from Plusnet to Metronet, mainly to save a few pounds a
month, but also to escape the increasing traffic shaping that Plusnet are starting to
employ, before it begins to affect my light usage (around 4 Gig a month).

Has anyone had experience of Metronet? I don't want to find I've moved from a service
that I'm reasonably happy with to one that I'm going to regret, just for the sake of
a few pounds a month.

I am going to move myself, probably to Metronet. They do appear to have a
good name and the last time I looked at comparisons they were noticeably
better than PN. I have a friend with them and he is very satisfied.
Depends on your use obviously but you could find them more expensive than
PN. For your money you get web access and a partially throttled external
usenet server (much better than PN though I understand) and they do charge
for literally everything including e-mail and changing between accounts at
the same contention and speed. Of course if you get your own external
usenet account there is no restriction. Commonsense suggests their business
model is much more sustainable than PN's.

I see Metronet is listed amongst the recommendations, as a highly respected
ISP, in the ISP Review "Guide to choosing an ADSL ISP". PN is not so
listed.

I switched from Plusnet three weeks back, no regrets. They give you a
connection and it's up to you how it's used, no traffic shaping and
I've had full speeds at all times. If you want go mad downloading from
time to time you pay the extra on top of your included package
allowance. You are not speed limited and told you are bad person for
using to much bandwidth, you just pay more up to the price cap. I
never used more than 30 gig a month (normally around 20) with Plusnet
but the Usenet speeds saga was the final straw.

For heavy downloaders, there is still the chance of their Fair Use
policy being used, if one did keep the connection running full speed
24x7 (though I've seen no comments to suggest anyone has had their
account closed or other traffic reduction measures suggested/imposed.

Been with them since Feb. No problems at all. Service always there, email
billing efficiently automated.

I had one support issue which I thought was their end, but the helpful and
supremely patient guy on email tech support talked me through a few options
until (to be fair, off my own bat), I reinstalled my modem driver.

I'm guessing for 4Gb a month, you'll be paying more than Plusnet. And as
others have said, you need to sort your email provision from elsewhere (I
stuck with BT for £1.50 a month). But if that's a price worth paying for
fewer restrictions, I'd have no qualms.

Been with them for 3 years, excellent service and their tech support
actually KNOW what they are talking about, they dont read scripts. Suggest
you have a look at the Metronet forum on www.adslguide.org.uk.
Oh and they do support and use Linux if thats important to you.

True, but if you were really intent on hammering your connection Zen
would work out cheaper and they have an Acceptable Use policy
regarding excessive bandwidth as well (again not aware of anyone
having their account closed).

Haven't used them but definitely one I'd consider. They seem to have
the right approach, good support, no frills, pay a fair price for what
you use and use it how you see fit.

Bear in mind it's a monthly contract as well, so it's not like you're
stuck with them if it didn't work out.
