vgetty + VOCP + pppd (AutoPPP)

m/vgetty-1.1.30-1 + VOCP 0.9.3 + pppd-2.4.1-6

I am having problems with mgetty or pppd (not quite sure which one)
negotiating the two modems connection. On the server side, I have a US
Robotics 56K Voice/Fax/Data under Linux. On the client side, I have a
Supra 56K V.92 Voice under Windows XP. In the vgetty.ttySx log, I see
the server waiting for the 'CONNECT' string. I can hear the modems
negotiating, but they never seem to estabilish the connection. Then
the client disconnects and the server responds with a 'NO CARRIER'
error.

Any idea what my be causing the two modems to not negotiate?

I assume you mean mgetty.ttySx log file.

If the modems cannot connect then it has nothing to do with ppp, mgetty or
any other software. It is a problem with the hardware and you need to
figure that out first.

So, on ring, mgetty does answer the modem? If you could post the whole of
the mgetty log it might help. And especially increase the logging of the
mgetty. Insert debug 5 into the section of /etc/mgetty*/mgetty.config
which deals with that serial port.
Or make the line in the file in general state
debug 5
(Look for lines which have debug in them)

If your debug level is not high enough you will never see any messages at
all.

Then post the line from /etc/mgetty*/login.config
eg

/AutoPPP/ - a_ppp /usr/sbin/pppd auth +chap -pap debug nodetach

No... I mean the vgetty.ttySx log file. I am using vgetty witch is
suppose to switch to mgetty when I send the DTMF 'D' Tone and it forces
it to mgetty in data mode. The mgetty.log.ttySx file remains empty

I have tried configuring the port speeds for the server-side
(mgetty.conf/voice.conf) and client-side modems to connect at 38400. I
have also tried forcing both modems to v.34 by using appropriate init
strings for each. It still results in the same out come.

Yes... It does answer the modem with vgetty and the DTMF 'D' Tone
switchs it from expecting 'OK|VCON' to 'CONNECT'. Then the modems try
to negotiate a connection, but the server eventually fails with 'NO
CARRIER' and the client disconnects.

Thank you for the suggestion. I have read through the VOCP docs in
detail. My problem is not getting the server to detect its own modem.
My issue is connecting a remote modem to the server modem using
m/vgetty and pppd over a data connection.

I would suggest that you first set up mgetty to answer as a data call
directly, just to make sure that the two machines can actually talk to each
other as data modems. What it looks to me like is that there is no
negotiation. The other modem just sits there with an open line doing
nothing, and your modem eventually gets tired and reports no carrier.

How do you sent the dtmf tone? HOw do you after you have sent it, make sure
that the other modem actually is in data mode thereafter. After all you
have shouted at it with your voice message.

Ie, I suspect tha the problem is at the other side.

Note that this has nothing to do with ppp. This is long before pppd ever
gets called. It is at the level of vgetty and the remote modem.

That may not be right. Apparently the modem associated with m/vgetty
timed out waiting for a CARRIER. The modem won't start physical-layer
negotiations until it detects a CARRIER, and if that doesn't happen
within the time set in register s7 then it aborts.

If you could take vgetty out of the equation and substitute pppd then
we might get further. As Unruh pointed out, PPP doesn't seem to enter
into the picture, i.e., it's doubtful that vgetty uses PPP as a conduit.
And if all you want is a PPP connection then you don't want vgetty
involved, only mgetty.

Here's another. The audio "player" seemed to start before the serial
connection is attempted, and if it sends audio to the modem then that
would interfere with the negotiations. I'd expect the player to start
after the modems connect.

Finally, a question. How/why does vgetty receive a DTMF signal when
the modems aren't connected?

As suggested, I removed vgetty out of the equation and just used mgetty
with AutoPPP. I continued to have problems estabilishing the data
connection using the Diamond Supra 56K V.92 Voice modem on the client
machine to make the connection to the US Robotics 56K V.92
Voice/Fax/Data modem on the server. So, I decided to try an extra US
Robotics modem (identical to the one on the server) on the client
machine and it worked first time under mgetty and AutoPPP. Now, it
appears that the US Robotics modem on the client machine won't send the
DTMF 'D' Tone inline with the dial-up phone number in DUN (i.e.,
5551234,,,,,,,D,D,D,D,D). It will dial the dumber, but the DTMF 'D'
Tone is never sent.

The player is setup to exit out of vgetty and switch to mgetty when the
DTMF 'D' Tone is received to enable the server-side modem to begin
negotiations for data/fax connections. This seemed to work with the
Diamond Supra, but it could never negotiate the connection. I would
verify that this is the same with the client-side US Robotics modem,
but I can't figure out why it won't send the DTMF 'D' Tone.

Any ideas?
