i have a client who send out large amounts of invoices via email by using
the quickbooks software. quickbooks has a function that lets you email an
invoice while its onscreen. the email is actually sent via intuit's mail
servers. this worked fine for ever. suddenly she cant send any emails via
quickbooks... they say "sent" but never arrive. i had intuit on the phone to
run some tests and they cant even PING my clients mail server... it seems
that the intuit network cant contact my clients network at all. any thoughts
on whats going on? im stumped, the CIO at intuit is lost, my clients ISP
says its not them etc...

Just because ping doesn't work has nothing to do with email. Ping is ICMP
and the mail is TCP:25. ICMP can be blocked without effecting the mail.
The proper way to test a mail server is to telnet to its address,...if it
answers then it works.

You ISP might have spam filtering in place that is getting in the way.

On the other hand, depending on how Intuit rigs this up, it may just send
the invoice directly from Intuit's server to the destination simply by
having Quickbooks telnet directly to their server and post the messge. Your
ISP and thier server would not even play any role in it. I suspect that this
is the most likely way it works

sorry, i really wasnt very clear. as a test, we tried sending an invoice
through quickbooks to an address on OUR domain. it did not arrive. thats why
i had Intuit test to see if they could contact our email server. yes, i
first tried telnetting to port 25 with no luck and as a last resort figured
hey, if you guys cant even ping me, then your smtp servers are not going to
be able to contact my smtp servers. and thats where we stand. i even had the
quickbooks tech support guy send an email straight through his outlook
client... no good. never arrived. but it also didnt get bounced back to him,
nor did it ever hit my server. this is a strange one. more thoughts?

Get the SMTP server IP address of Intuit and check with your ISP and see if
they're blocking it with a spam service they're using.
