Yeah, it's very different if you're off site. Getting apps at 10MB even,
is very noticeably faster than at 1MB (on a *good* day).
All I can tell you is to try moving your window manager around. If you
have a local manager, run it instead of a remote one. It gets to be a
bit of a pain sometimes, having to put in the complete command every
time, unless you write a bunch of scripts locally.
I'm running Cygwin's X server right now and I have three gkrellms
running on three different remote machines. One's on a fractional T and
even that one runs fine. I don't run mozilla across an X session unless
I am desperate. (The other two are on a DS3, so those seem like they're
local!)
CPU makes a difference, cipher makes a big difference (use blowfish or
AES) and you might wanna tweak compression, too.
