Very slow X-Win32

I recently got my first apartment and set up cable access with a NAT
router. Internet access works fine, haven't had any problems there.
My problem comes when I try to connect to the computers at my school
through ssh in order to do homework on their machines. I've been
using Tera Term Pro SSH and X-Win32 on a Windows box for a few years
now; I never had any problems with connectivity or speed when I was
local to the university. Now that I'm not, I'm noticing the ssh
terminal has a visible delay to it (not unexpected) and any X
applications I run take multiple minutes to display on my screen. Is
this something that is simply caused by not being local to the
university, or could there be something I need to change on my router?
Are there settings in either my SSH or X server programs that would
increase the speed? Thanks so much in advance!

Yeah, it's very different if you're off site. Getting apps at 10MB even,
is very noticeably faster than at 1MB (on a *good* day).

All I can tell you is to try moving your window manager around. If you
have a local manager, run it instead of a remote one. It gets to be a
bit of a pain sometimes, having to put in the complete command every
time, unless you write a bunch of scripts locally.

I'm running Cygwin's X server right now and I have three gkrellms
running on three different remote machines. One's on a fractional T and
even that one runs fine. I don't run mozilla across an X session unless
I am desperate. (The other two are on a DS3, so those seem like they're
local!)

CPU makes a difference, cipher makes a big difference (use blowfish or
AES) and you might wanna tweak compression, too.

HTH,

Bill
