Have you tried creating a HOSTS and/or an LMHOSTS file(s)
for the clients?

That's right, Windows 2000/XP client needs access to a DNS that hosts the
appropriate zone and records for the Windows domain they're accessing.

As Massimo said, W2k/XP clients should always point to the local DNS
service, so that they can see the SRV records of Active Directory. Your
local DNS service should be set up to forward requests for "outside"
addresses - the clients don't need to know the external DNS server's
address.
