Very Large Network DHCP...

Hi, I have always managed small networks, up to 30 clients, between
computers and network peripherals, without much of a hassle, with or
without a DHCP server...

Now, a VERY big client has asked me to create a network with a DHCP
server that, between computers and peripherals, will count about 400
units!!! I have no idea on how to have more than the 0..254 = 255
computers...

I thought about a computer in the middle with two network cards on two
different networks somehow connected, but no clue on to make that
work...

Any help is greatly appreciated...

Ciao, Lupo

I am not sure I understand the question, but you may want to use class B or
class A that will give more than you need.

You're going to need multiple subnets or, a network switch that supports
VLANs.
If you didn't already know that, you have quite a bit to learn.
If this is something you need fairly soon, I would consider asking for help
from another friend or associate in IT.
Or... hire someone to do it.

I would put them in two subnets joined by a LAN router. You set up two
scopes, one for each subnet. As long as the router supports DHCP relay,
everything just works. Each machine gets a network config which works in its
subnet.

In subnet 1 (which contains the DHCP server) the clients broadcast on
the ethernet and the DHCP server replies with a DHCP offer directly.

In subnet 2, the broadcast is received by the router which relays the
request to the DHCP server in the other LAN segment. Because the broadcast
was received on the subnet 2 interface of the router, the offered config
will be from the correct scope for that subnet.

Due to Ethernet effieiciency the segments need to stay below 254 Hosts (/24)
Use 2 segments
2 segments @ 254 = 508 hosts

/8 bit and /16 bit segments are for supernetting.
The lower bit masks are for supernetting over backbones where they are used
in router's routing tables to reduce the number of route table entries to
keep the tables efficient,...that is how the routers out in "Internet Land"
function. But the "large segments" are expected to be broken down into
smaller pieces (245 hosts or less) when they finally get down the "host
networks" where the individual PCs "live".
