Verizon DSL Westell 2110 modem problems

I can't seem to make PPPoE work with my new DSL service from Verizon. I
have a DSL modem Westell model 2110. It works (of course) under Win2000
and/or Win98 SE, but with a recent copy of roaring penguin's PPPoE, I
can't seem to connect. My Linux is Mandrake 2.4.26

I downloaded the source for PPPoE and used the gui-go compile script.

Any help would be apprciated. I looked at the Roaring Penguin's notes,
and the HOWTO on DSL and pppoe, but to no avail. Verizon certainly
isn't any help for any OS other than windoze!

Not enough info to know what _is_ going on, but ...

~ a month ago someone else had RH/Verizon problems. Look over the
posts and see if it sounds familiar.

Solution is in Raj's last post, IIRC.
