Verizon DSL: MAC Addresses?

I keep reading that part of setting up a router to work with
Verizon DSL involves cloning the user's PC MAC address into the
router.

But the sit I'm trying to set the router up on is used by several
people - each with their own laptop.

They *claim* that all they do is plug an Ethernet cable from
their PC to Verizon's DSL box.

If that is true, it seems to conflict with the MAC address thing:
i.e each person's PC has it's own MAC address and there's no
problem... so why should the router's MAC address need changing?

Can anybody explain?

FWIW I am 99.9% sure that this site does not have a static IP
address.

I finally figured it out. FIOS and DSL need different
connections to the router.

FIOS: The Verizon box looks like "The Internet"

Router|Internet ==> FIOS box

DSL: The Verizon box looks like a router or switch

Router|Ports 1-4 ==> DSL box.
