verizon DSL kit requires windows software

I read many positive results from linux users using
verizon DSL with the westell 2200 DSL modem.

So I got the kit, but I've found out that the
install process seems to require you to use
Windows only software to get the username/passwd
to log into the network. Since I only have linux
I can't run that and without the password/username
I can't get on. How could I work around this?
Some people say you can call them and say
you are using a router and they will give you
a username password on the phone? I didn't get
that because I'd think they'd tell you to
plug into the modem directly from the pc, do
the setup then swap the cable back to the router
and the router to the modem.
Any ideas?

Call and tell them you don't run Windows, and could they please give you a
username and password on the phone, since the software they supplied
doesn't meet your needs?

What, exactly, is the setup here, software wis? I have an Actiontec DSL
modem I'm using with Qwest, but the setup screen is available by pointing
a browser at the modem's ip address - 192.168.0.1, so setup in Linux was
no problem. From what you're saying, I assume they are not supporting
browser setup?

They should have some setup procedure for a MAC - would that work for you?

Found this:

from here:

which was a link from here:

I think you have to do this first:
"Call Tech Support to obtain the daily password to use this method:"

This is the main forum link:

Linux does work with Verizon, though you may have issues if you dual
boot with Windows.

That's right, you can use a browser to hit 192.168.1.1 to set the dsl
modem's username and password (the factory default is "admin" and
"password") to do it's internal configuration. But to configure the
login username and password at verizon they make you use the windows
software they mailed you with the modem.

I got around this by borrowing a friends Win XP laptop and running
my disk from there. I personally think they didn't go with
using a browser to do the whole setup because then it would be easier to
avoid installing the MSN optional crud they give you with the cdrom.
Of course maybe it would have been harder to do the newbie handholding
stuff with a browser too because maybe the person's browser doesn't have
java or javascript installed or turned on.

Thanks for the info. I know they try to be a pain in the butt whenever
they can. Often there is setup info available for MAC, from which you can
figure out what to do for Linux. BTW - setting up Linux to use MSN was not
too bad, and it works better with Linux than it does with WIN98!!

I have the DSL working now in simple modem-> single pc mode, I'll later
try to switch to using the dsl modem as a bridge and ipcop box as
router/nat:
modem->ipcop->switch-> pcs

I mostly prefer ipcop to the 'who knows what' firewall is going
on in the westell. Plus the westell isn't very convenient for
me to use my cisco ipsec vpn client since I have to downset
the firewall to low, use the vpn, then set it back to medium.
vpn seems to be blocked in medium or higher (oddly the page
to set that says that even high mode allows IPSEC)
I suspect I could setup a change to the firewall to allow
IPSEC IKE / IPSEC ESP services but I'm not to sure what that
is.

So far the speed is 1.47 Megabit/sec down and about 366KBit/sec up
which is pretty much what I signed for (1.5Mbit and 384k).
It was pretty amazing to download a 42 MB file in just a few
minutes that I'd earlier gotten by dialup over several hours.

One odd thing, I set the Westell 2200 modem up to do auto mode
with a 20 minute time out. I wanted to do that to add a slight
extra bit of security since the modem would mostly only be exposed when
I'm using it. I went away from the system for a long time (many hours)
and came back and noticed it had been up the whole time.
Am I misunderstanding this auto mode? I didn't have the email
program (Kmail) sent to interval check the mail so I don't
understand why the modem was online. Is it likely a web
page I left in my browser does some javascript that kept checking a
page? I had Galeon up for web and Mozilla up for usenet news.. maybe
mozilla looks at the news server occasionally.
So I went back to manual mode so I need to click the Connect button to
go on which isn't a big deal.

Am I to infer that Verizon *forces* their DSL customers to use MSN when
their connection goes live?

I'm still in the info gathering on Verizon DSL; at present I have to use
dialup.

I don't think so, I was simply comparing my experience setting up MSN with
Qwest DSL (rather simple up and down the line) with his experience setting
up Verizon DSL.
