Utility for controling wireless LAN?

In Windows, I used to have an icon that represented the WLAN
connection. It could be used to check signal strength, disable
the connection, and wake it up again later. Is there any similar
utility available for Linux? I can't figure out how to temporarily
disable the connection in YaST other than by un-installing the card,
which is a bit drastic.

Also, is there a good free anti-virus program for Linux?

There are some widgets for kde and gnome I think, but you can go alog
just using iwconfig and ifconfig from a normal console.

There are viruses for Linux, but they are few and unless you run your
machine as root all the time they can't do anything. Most 'antivirus' for
Linux are more designed to clean crap from Windowses files so Win clients
can get their junk less junkier.

KWiFimanager. Another way, is to use the ifdown command and ifup to
restart.

Why would you need one, if you're not running a mail server?

I use apradar, which works well for what it does but doesn't manage
WEP keys. That project went into "scrap it all and do a total
rewrite" a while ago, so I haven't seen any recent releases, though.

Not necessary. Though there is chkrootkit, a good free rootkit
checker.

What for? Unless you're serving mail and files to Windows clients, there's
no need for antivirus software in linux.

ClamAV it's GPL and it works quite well. You can also get free versions
for personal use of HBED+V Antivir, Panda and some other Linux
anti-virus.
