Uswitch: Lists free Sky Broadband as best option for postcode, then Sky
refuse to supply

My friend went to uswitch.com to find the best value broadband for her
area. One of the options given for her postcode was the free broadband
from Sky available to Sky subscribers. So, following the advice of
uswitch my girlfriend signed up for Sky's minimum package. Sky was
installed today and we just phoned Sky to get broadband enabled.

Sky then told us that she could not get Broadband by Sky for free, only
broadband for £17 a month as the 'free' broadband network is not
yet rolled out to that area.. Has anyone had this issue?

Facts
- uswitch.com listed free Sky Broadband as the best option for her
area.
- Sky said you cannot place an order for broadband until you were a
customer.
- Sky only said the free broadband was not available after she had
installed her TV.

I smell a rat here?
1. If Sky can provide broadband for £17.99 surely they can supply it
for free?
2. Why does uswitch list Sky Broadband as available and then Sky say
not?
3. Are Sky punishing my friend because she has gone for the minimum
package? Has anyone else been

So the answer will be to cancel. Has anyone had this problem?

Cheers,

David.

They could if they wanted to make a loss.
The £17.99 package is just BT broadband and probably costs Sky that much.
They use it in areas where they haven't installed their own kit yet.

The Sky connect (BT) package is but the rest are not.

My dad is getting the base package.
His router arrived today so they do let you have it.

If he cancles he will probably pay more than the £17.99 they want if he goes
elsewhere.
They will switch him to the Sky packages when they install their equipment
in the exchange.
Maybe he should ask when that will be?

Firstly, I assume your friend checked with $ky before ordering anything?

not necessarily, I believe their free offering is via Easynet's LLU, not
every exchange is unbundled though.
So the only alternative is MaxADSL via BT foneline.

But $ky Broadband IS available, just not the offering you were wanting.

if you friend had bothered to check in the first instance, with $ky, before
ordering, then maybe they wouldn't be in this mess.

The first mistake was probably using uswitch!

They are not noted for being impartial - after all, they get a hefty
commission.

When I last evaluated costs for gas supply, they didn't list my chosen
suppiler at all until I selected an esoteric set of options. Had I not
known my supplier existed, and should be there, I'd not have found out
from uswitch. When I did finally select them (for comparison purposes
only, I switched myself) I got some text that was clearly designed to
put me off, as the company concerned didn't offer commission.

When I tried Uswitch some time ago and just for a laugh I might add,
Toucan came out top! I wouldn't touch Toucan with a bargepole.

The Sky connect 17 pound odd package looks good value for IPStream
to me if you want or already have Sky TV.
