USR 8054 cuts out

Hi. I got a USR 8054 a few weeks ago:

http://www.usr.com/products/networki...sp?sku=USR8054

(an 802.11g router, that can segregate 802.11b clients and has four 10/100
ports)

I upgraded the firmware to 1.17 (the latest). Since I got it, I've
noticed that I periodically get kicked off IM servers, so I investigated.
According to a signal-strength meter on my 802.11b-using laptop, the
broadcast stops for a few seconds (strength drops to 0, which makes SSH,
HTTP, SMB sessions pause), then resumes. I have also seen the front-panel
Ethernet-connection lights go out, then come back, as if there were a power
outage (but there wasn't), and I don't think the power LED went out at that
time. I don't know if these events are coincident (as it's almost
impossible to be near the router and near the laptop when it happens
unpredictably), but I suspect they are. BTW, it happened twice while I was
composing this message.

Has anyone seen this, or more importantly, does anyone know what to do to
fix it?

Have you tried doing a reset?
Hold in the reset button, unplug the router, plug it back in (keep holding
the reset button for about 5 sec. after you plug back in). You will have to
re-do your router setting unless you saved them to a file.

I had done one earlier, when I was trying to get its syslog capability
working (USR tech support told me it's not supported yet; it should be in an
as-yet-unnamed firmware release[1]), and it oddly insisted on getting a
firmware upgrade after it rebooted. Do you think another reset might help?

It doesn't matter now, as I know what firmware is in there, but how do you
tell what firmware is in the router? I couldn't find it.

[1] WTF? The syslog protocol has been documented for 20+ years. This isn't
rocket science.

Two atoms are walking along. Suddenly, one stops. The other says,
"What's wrong?" "I've lost an electron." "Are you sure?" "I'm positive!"

I've got the same problem.
I've found that if I disable the wireless connection it seems to work
fine. If the wireless is enabled - it works for about 5 minutes then
the router seems to stop working to the point I can't even ping it. It
wont start working again until I reset or unplug it.
I've got the latest firmware but I haven't flashed it.
Anyone else run into this? I'd rather not contact their tech support
I'm sure it sucks.

Great, but the wireless is the only reason I got it.

I've unplugged the router, then when that failed to work, restarted my
laptop. I don't know yet if power-cycling the router is necessary.

1.17? Still acts bad, but not as bad as you're saying. Of course, its
misbehavior seems to be exacerbated by traffic; your traffic pattern is
almost certainly different from mine.

BTW, have you found firmware or a config option that enables the "European"
channels (12-14 IIRC)?

Took them over a month to get back to me via email the first time (probably
carrier pigeon would have been faster), and only a few days the second time.
Phone TS was OK. By the time they got back to me the first time, I'd
already solved the problem.

Flash the firmware; if that doesn't work call (or email, wait a few days,
then call) tech support.
